Karim Benzema has emerged as a potential surprise target for Newcastle United, despite the financial and contractual complications surrounding his possible return to European football.
The 38-year-old striker is currently a free agent after leaving Al-Hilal, but his existing relationship with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) could make a move away from the Saudi Pro League difficult.
Newcastle’s ownership by PIF has, however, sparked speculation that the Premier League club could offer Benzema an unusual route back to European football if he wants to continue his career outside Saudi Arabia.
The prospect comes despite Newcastle already having several attacking options.
Yoane Wissa has made an impressive start since joining the club and also scored three goals for DR Congo at the World Cup. Newcastle also signed Belgium forward Matias Fernandez-Pardo from Lille on deadline day, while William Osula remains part of Eddie Howe’s plans despite currently recovering from injury.
Osula scored nine goals last season and is expected to take on a bigger role this campaign.
However, Benzema’s availability and vast experience could make him an attractive short-term option for Howe.
Benzema’s PIF agreement presents major obstacle
The biggest hurdle is understood to be Benzema’s contractual relationship with PIF rather than his age or Newcastle’s attacking depth.
According to RMC Sport, Lyon explored the possibility of bringing their former striker back to the club during the summer through an intermediary.
Lyon sporting director Matthieu Louis-Jean confirmed there had been contact but said the proposal was quickly abandoned because of Benzema’s contractual circumstances.
“It’s true there was contact with an intermediary this summer regarding Karim. For me, it didn’t go any further than that.
“It was impossible given Karim’s contract situation. Karim is a phenomenal player. We didn’t even try to pursue it further because we knew how difficult the situation was.”
Benzema left Real Madrid for Al-Ittihad in 2023 before later moving to Al-Hilal. He became a free agent following his departure from the Saudi club.
His ambassadorial agreement with PIF is reportedly central to his current situation. Benzema is understood to be able to retain the benefits of the arrangement by either retiring or continuing his playing career in the Saudi Pro League.
A move to another league could put that agreement at risk, creating a significant financial consideration for the former Ballon d’Or winner.
Could Newcastle provide a route back to Europe?
Newcastle’s ownership structure has naturally made the club a subject of speculation.
Sport Witness has suggested that the Magpies could potentially provide Benzema with a route to continue playing European football while maintaining his connection with PIF.
For now, however, there is no indication that Newcastle have made an advanced move for the veteran striker.
Any potential transfer remains speculative, although Benzema’s free-agent status and Newcastle’s relationship with PIF could create an unusual possibility before the striker decides the next step in his career.
