Atletico de Madrid have reached an agreement with Juventus for the loan signing of Canada striker Jonathan David for the 2026/27 season.
The forward will spend the campaign with Atletico de Madrid after completing his medical in Madrid. He underwent the required tests at the Vithas – Invictum High-Performance Sports Medicine Centre at Arturo Soria University Hospital before travelling to the club’s offices at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.
David, who will wear Atletico de Madrid’s red and white shirt, arrives with an established scoring record at both club and international level.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on 14 January 2000, David moved to Haiti when he was young before relocating to Ottawa at the age of six. His progress as a youth player in the Canadian capital attracted the attention of Gent, who signed him in early 2018.
The move to Belgium marked the beginning of his senior career in Europe. David quickly demonstrated his attacking ability, scoring 37 goals in two seasons with Gent.
His form earned him a transfer to French club LOSC Lille in 2020. Over the next five years, he made 232 appearances for the Ligue 1 side, scoring 109 goals and contributing 31 assists.
During his time with LOSC Lille, David won both the French league title and the Super Cup. His performances also led to a move to Juventus in 2025, before his latest switch to Atletico de Madrid was confirmed.
At international level, David has represented Canada since 2018 and is the country’s all-time leading goalscorer, with 42 goals. He was part of the Canada squad at the 2026 World Cup and scored three times during the tournament.
Although David is primarily deployed as a centre-forward, his game includes considerably more than his finishing. He is known for his movement, pace and ability to combine with team-mates, while his versatility allows him to operate in different attacking roles.
Atletico de Madrid will now have the Canada international available for the 2026/27 campaign as they add a forward with experience in Belgium, France, Italy and on the international stage.
The club welcomed their new arrival with the message: “Welcome, Jonathan David!”
