Ivory Coast boss justifies Elye Wahi call-up after striker switches allegiance

Forward Elye Wahi has been called up to the Ivory Coast national team for the first time, marking a significant moment in his international career after opting to represent the West African nation.

The Marseille striker has been included in head coach Emerse Fae’s squad for upcoming friendly matches against South Korea and Scotland, in what signals a shift in the team’s attacking options ahead of the next international window.

Wahi’s inclusion comes after a period of uncertainty over his international future.

The 21-year-old, who previously represented France at under-21 level, had long been viewed as undecided about which country to represent at senior level.

However, he has now committed to Ivory Coast, a decision that has been welcomed by the national team coaching staff.

Speaking at a press conference, head coach Emerse Fae explained that the player’s change in stance played a key role in his selection.

“I had initially closed the door on Elye Wahi because of his initial choice, but given the steps he took and the sincerity he showed in reversing his decision, I was ultimately convinced by his actions. Elye Wahi has therefore been selected.”

The call-up is expected to strengthen Ivory Coast’s attacking line as they prepare for their upcoming fixtures.

The friendlies against South Korea and Scotland will offer Wahi an opportunity to make his debut and integrate into the squad.

Wahi’s arrival introduces fresh competition among the Elephants’ forwards, with the coaching staff keen to assess new options as they build towards future competitions.

His pace and finishing ability have been noted during his time in club football, where he has made seven league appearances this season, scoring four goals and providing one assist.

The matches against South Korea and Scotland will not only serve as preparation for future tournaments but also provide an early glimpse into how Wahi fits into Fae’s tactical plans.
