Simone Inzaghi was booked after leaving his technical area to protest against a refereeing decision during Al Hilal’s Saudi Pro League meeting with Al Ahli.
The Italian manager moved beyond the designated coaching area around 15 minutes into the match at Kingdom Arena, appearing close to entering the pitch as he challenged a decision made by Venezuelan referee Jesus Valenzuela.
Valenzuela responded by showing Inzaghi a yellow card, meaning the Al Hilal manager remained at risk of being sent off for the rest of the match.
The fixture, described as a Saudi football classic, was being played on Tuesday evening after being postponed from the third round of the Roshn Saudi League. Al Hilal were hosting Al Ahli at Kingdom Arena.
Inzaghi’s reaction came during a tense opening period, with the Al Hilal boss visibly unhappy with the referee’s call. His decision to move out of the technical area brought the official’s intervention and resulted in the first disciplinary action against the manager.
The booking left Inzaghi under pressure on the touchline for the remainder of the contest. Any further breach of the referee’s instructions could have led to a second yellow card and his dismissal.
Al Hilal then established a commanding position before the interval, moving 2-0 ahead against Al Ahli.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic opened the scoring before adding a second goal to complete his brace, while Crysencio Summerville also found the net as Al Hilal built their advantage in the first half.
The match was therefore shaped by two notable developments before the break: Inzaghi’s disciplinary incident and Al Hilal’s strong start in front of goal.
The yellow card issued to Inzaghi followed his attempt to make his objection directly during play, rather than remaining inside the limits of the technical area. The referee’s decision ensured that the manager’s conduct became one of the main talking points of the early stages of the match.
Despite the confrontation, Al Hilal’s response on the field was emphatic. Their two-goal lead before half-time came through the goals of Milinkovic-Savic and Summerville, giving the home side control of the classic encounter.
