Arsenal began their Premier League title defence with a convincing 3-0 victory over Coventry City, as Mikel Arteta’s side made a strong start to the new season.
The Gunners are aiming to retain the Premier League title they won last season, when they finished above Manchester City. Their opening result provided an early statement of intent, with Arsenal scoring twice before half-time and adding a third goal shortly after the interval.
Kai Havertz opened the scoring after 15 minutes. The Germany international converted a low cross from Riccardo Calafiori, finishing the move from close range to give Arsenal the lead.
The goal established early control for Arteta’s team and put Coventry City under pressure. Arsenal doubled their advantage eight minutes later, with Bukayo Saka finding the net in the 23rd minute.
Saka’s goal followed a low ball into the penalty area from the left by Christos Tzolis. Coventry City goalkeeper Karl Rushworth attempted to keep the delivery out, but the ball fell to Saka, who made no mistake when presented with an unguarded goal.
That left Arsenal two goals ahead before the break and gave them a firm platform from which to manage the remainder of the contest. Coventry City were unable to reduce the deficit before half-time, while Arsenal carried their advantage into the second half.
Martin Ødegaard completed the scoring in the 49th minute. Ben White supplied the pass from the right side of the penalty area, allowing the Norway international to strike powerfully into the left side of the goal.
Ødegaard’s finish ended the scoring and confirmed a three-goal victory for Arsenal. Havertz, Saka and Ødegaard were the players on target as Arsenal secured the result without conceding.
The opening win means Arteta’s side have started their attempt to defend the Premier League crown with maximum momentum. Arsenal’s title success last season came ahead of Manchester City, and the club will now look to build on this performance as the campaign develops.
The match’s decisive moments came in three separate phases: Havertz put Arsenal in front during the opening quarter of an hour, Saka extended the lead before the interval, and Ødegaard added the final goal four minutes after the restart.
With the score at 3-0, Arsenal completed a comfortable beginning to their title defence against Coventry City.
