The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is considering significant changes to the Black Stars’ technical team following the appointment of Carlos Queiroz as head coach, as part of a wider restructuring effort ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The move comes after Ghana secured qualification for the tournament, prompting a review of the national team’s technical structure. The GFA has already dismissed former head coach Otto Addo after a series of disappointing friendly performances against Austria and Germany in March.
In addition, Winfried Schäfer has been removed from his dual role as technical advisor and Director of Football.
Attention has now turned to the composition of the new backroom staff that will assist Queiroz, with discussions ongoing about potential changes. The GFA’s Communications Director, Henry Asante Twum, confirmed that no final decisions have yet been made.
Speaking in an interview, he said the new coach has requested additional deputies to strengthen the technical team. However, he added that the current staff remain in place for the time being while deliberations continue.
“He has requested the addition of more deputies,” Twum explained, noting that there is still no clear outcome regarding who will remain or be replaced.
The existing technical team features a number of assistants and specialists, including John Paintsil, Desmond Ofei, Kim Lars Björkegren, Kris Perquy, Alain Ravera, Fatawu Dauda, José Daniel Martínez Alfonso, Gregory De Grauwe, Carlos Lozano Romero, Abdul Rahman Alhassan and Issah Amadou. Their roles are currently under review as part of the restructuring process.
Queiroz is expected to formally take charge next month, marking the beginning of a new era for the Black Stars. His initial fixtures will include a friendly match against Mexico, followed by another preparatory game against Wales on 2 June.
Ghana will be making its fifth appearance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and faces a challenging group-stage draw. The team has been placed in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia.
The Black Stars are scheduled to begin their campaign against Panama on 17 June, before taking on England and Croatia in subsequent matches.
The ongoing decisions regarding the technical team are seen as crucial to Ghana’s preparations, as the country looks to strengthen its setup and improve performances on the global stage following the appointment of Quieroz.
