Gerrard urges patience after Salah omission in PSG clash

Liverpool forward Mohamed Salah was left out of the starting line-up for his side’s Champions League quarter-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, prompting former captain Steven Gerrard to urge the Egyptian to remain ready to make an impact.

The decision, taken for the match at the Parc des Princes, saw Liverpool manager Arne Slot opt for an alternative attacking trio, with Hugo Ekitike, Florian Wirtz and Dominik Szoboszlai leading the line, supported by Jeremie Frimpong.

Salah, typically a central figure in Liverpool’s European campaigns, was instead named among the substitutes in a move that raised eyebrows ahead of the crucial tie.

Liverpool’s starting XI featured Giorgi Mamardashvili in goal, while Joe Gomez, Ibrahima Konate, Virgil van Dijk and Milos Kerkez formed the defensive line. In midfield, Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister were tasked with anchoring the side.

Salah’s omission comes shortly after Liverpool’s heavy 4-0 defeat to Manchester City, a result that saw them exit the FA Cup. Despite that setback, the forward had started that match, making his absence in Paris all the more notable.

Speaking before the game, Gerrard addressed the situation in an interview with TNT Sports, emphasising the need for professionalism and focus from the experienced forward.

“You have to be ready when your opportunity comes and use that as motivation,” he said.

Gerrard highlighted that matches at this stage of the Champions League demand a high level of discipline and commitment from every player, whether starting or coming off the bench.

“At this stage of the competition, you must get the basics right. There are many ways Liverpool can improve their level tonight .. they have to give everything. They cannot be an easy target.”

The former Liverpool captain suggested that squad rotation and tactical adjustments are part of elite-level football, particularly in high-stakes European fixtures.

His comments reflect the expectation that players of Salah’s calibre must be prepared to influence the game regardless of when they are introduced.

The match represents a significant test for Liverpool as they seek to progress to the semi-finals against a PSG side known for its attacking strength. With Salah starting on the bench, attention will be on whether he is called upon later in the match and how he responds.
