Manchester City have re-signed goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli from Marseille on a two-year contract, with the move reportedly costing £1.7m (€2m).
The 34-year-old returns to City for a second spell after first joining the club in 2016. He did not make his debut during that initial period, spending the 2016-17 season on loan at Real Sociedad before moving permanently to the Spanish side the following summer.
Rulli is expected to provide back-up to Gianluigi Donnarumma this season, following the departure of James Trafford earlier in the transfer window.
“This is an amazing opportunity for me and one I had to grasp,” Rulli told Manchester City’s official website.
“When the chance to join Manchester City comes along you have to go for it.
“Everyone knows what an impressive club this is. City’s success over a long time has been impressive.
“Everyone I have spoken to about City said I had to join them because they are a club with incredibly high standards.
“My job now is to train hard, get to know the players and staff and do everything I can to reach my best level.”
Rulli spent the past two seasons with Marseille, keeping 13 clean sheets in 63 Ligue 1 appearances. That total placed him joint-fifth among goalkeepers for clean sheets in the French top flight across the last two campaigns.
He also made 168 saves during that period, the fourth-highest figure among Ligue 1 goalkeepers. Marseille finished second in 2024-25 before ending last season in fifth place.
The Argentina international has had a varied career in Europe, also representing Ajax, Montpellier and Villarreal. He won the Europa League with Villarreal in the 2020-21 campaign.
Rulli was part of Argentina’s squad that lifted the 2022 World Cup in Qatar and also won the 2024 Copa America.
His return gives Manchester City further experience in the goalkeeping department as they prepare for the new campaign. Rulli’s previous spell at the club came before his established career in Spain and France, while his international honours include two of the biggest trophies available in the game.
Manchester City will now have Rulli competing for a place in the squad alongside Donnarumma, with his role expected to be primarily as the Italian goalkeeper’s deputy.
