Roma have made the best start in their Serie A history after opening the new campaign with two emphatic victories under Gian Piero Gasperini.
The Italian side began with a 4-0 victory over Fiorentina, scoring four unanswered goals in the opening round of the championship. They then produced an identical result against Lecce in the second round, this time securing the win away from home.
Those back-to-back victories have created a new record for Roma. For the first time, the club have started a Serie A season with two wins achieved by a margin of at least four goals.
The scale of the opening results makes the achievement particularly notable. Roma did not merely win both of their first two league matches; on each occasion, they finished four goals ahead of their opponents and prevented the opposition from scoring.
Gasperini’s team now have the chance to continue that perfect start when they face Atalanta in the next round of the Italian championship. The fixture will be played on Saturday, 5 September, and will see Gasperini come up against his former club.
The meeting with Atalanta will therefore carry an additional significance for Roma’s manager, as his current side attempt to build on a start that has already entered the club’s history. Their opening two results have established a clear early marker in the new Serie A campaign, with Roma producing the biggest winning margins of any opening sequence in their history.
The result against Fiorentina set the tone before Roma repeated the feat against Lecce on their travels. With two four-goal victories already recorded, the club move into their next match having achieved something no previous Roma team had managed at the beginning of a Serie A season.
Their encounter with Atalanta will take place in the third round, following the unprecedented opening run. It will also provide the first opportunity for Roma to extend that record against Gasperini’s former team, after the manager guided them through the first two matches of the campaign.
