Gabriel Jesus responds to Barcelona ‘Plan B’ talk after completing move

Barcelona forward Gabriel Jesus says he is not offended by suggestions that he was considered a reserve option to strengthen the club’s attack.

The Brazil international responded to discussion surrounding his move after Barcelona officially announced the transfer on 1 September. Jesus has signed a contract with the Catalan club that runs until the summer of 2029.

Speaking about the perception that he was not Barcelona’s first choice, Jesus said: “It doesn’t offend me when they say that I was Plan B.”

His comments address the central talking point surrounding his arrival at Barcelona. Rather than focusing on the idea that he may have been viewed as an alternative signing, the forward made clear that the description does not upset him.

Barcelona’s announcement confirmed Jesus as the club’s latest addition, with the long-term agreement securing his future until the end of the 2028-29 season. The transfer was formally communicated on 1 September, marking the beginning of his time with the Catalan side.

The forward has therefore joined Barcelona despite the debate over how the club initially assessed his availability and his place among their attacking options. Jesus’ response indicates that he does not regard the “Plan B” description as an insult.

The comments came as attention turned to the Brazilian’s move and the circumstances around Barcelona’s decision to bring him in. The club has now completed the transfer and committed to a deal lasting through to the summer of 2029.

Jesus is consequently at the centre of the latest discussion about Barcelona’s attacking reinforcement, with his own position on the matter clearly stated. He rejected the suggestion that being described as a secondary option should be considered offensive.

Barcelona’s confirmation on 1 September provided the official conclusion to the transfer process. The club announced that the Brazilian forward had signed a contract extending until the summer of 2029, while Jesus addressed the accompanying conversation about whether he had been viewed as a back-up choice.

His message was straightforward: the label does not bother him. Although the move has prompted claims that Barcelona regarded him as an alternative for the attack, Jesus said that he was not offended by that characterisation.

The transfer and the player’s response are now linked by the same issue: Barcelona have officially added Jesus, and he has publicly explained why the “Plan B” description does not concern him. With his contract in place until 2029, the Brazilian has joined the Catalan club while remaining relaxed about the debate over his status in the recruitment process.
