Former RS Berkane coach Ibenge close to Mali appointment

The Malian Football Federation has reportedly identified experienced Congolese coach Florent Ibenge as its preferred candidate to become the next head coach of the Mali national team.

The move comes after the departure of Belgian coach Tom Saintfiet, who stepped down from his role with the Eagles following a two-year spell in charge.

Mali’s football authorities moved quickly to begin the search for a replacement as preparations continue for upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and future international competitions.

According to reports from Mali, the Federation received 28 applications for the position, with a selection committee reviewing candidates based on technical ability, managerial experience, leadership qualities and their suitability for the national team’s long-term ambitions.

Following the evaluation process, five candidates were shortlisted for the final stage of discussions. The names included former Mali coach Mohamed Magassouba, former Morocco coach Badou Zaki, Portuguese managers António Conceição and Anthony Da Silva, as well as Ibenge.

However, reports indicate that Ibenge has now emerged as the federation’s preferred option to lead the national side into a new era.

The 64-year-old is widely regarded as one of the most respected coaches in African football, having built a strong reputation through success at both international and club level.

He first gained continental recognition during his spell with the DR Congo national football team, guiding the Leopards to a third-place finish at the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations before reaching the quarter-finals of the 2017 tournament.

Ibenge’s calm leadership style and tactical discipline have often been highlighted as key strengths throughout his managerial career.

At club level, he enjoyed major success with AS Vita Club, winning several domestic league titles and leading the club to the final of the 2014 CAF Champions League.

He later strengthened his continental reputation during his time with RS Berkane, where he guided the Moroccan side to CAF Confederation Cup success.

The Congolese coach also had a spell with Al Hilal Club before taking charge of Tanzanian side Azam FC in July 2025.

Mali’s football authorities are believed to see Ibenge as the ideal figure to maximise the potential of the country’s talented generation of players, many of whom compete at top European clubs.

An official announcement is expected once final administrative processes are completed and approved by the federation’s Executive Committee.

If confirmed, Ibenge will take charge of one of Africa’s most promising national teams as Mali continue their pursuit of major continental success.
