Former France international Patrick Vieira is set to visit Benin later this week, with a packed programme aimed at engaging key figures in the country’s football development.
The 49-year-old, who was born in Senegal and remains closely connected to African football, will be in Cotonou from Thursday, March 26 to Saturday, March 28, alongside fellow Diambars academy co-founder Jean-Marc Adjovi-Boco.
His visit is expected to bring together administrators, coaches and young players as part of efforts to strengthen the sport at multiple levels in Benin.
According to the planned itinerary, Vieira will begin his visit with official engagements shortly after arriving in the country on Thursday afternoon.
He is scheduled to meet Benin’s Minister of Sports before holding discussions with representatives of top-flight and second-tier clubs.
These meetings are likely to focus on the development of domestic football structures and the challenges facing clubs in the country.
The following day, attention will shift towards grassroots and youth football.
Vieira is expected to travel to Grand-Popo, where he will interact with members of the national school team as well as coaches from the country’s top two divisions.
The visit will also include a stop at GMK, where academy directors are set to engage with the former midfielder on issues related to talent development and training systems.
On Saturday, the final day of his visit, Vieira will continue his focus on emerging talent with a trip to Missérété.
There, he is due to meet young players at a development centre, offering them a rare opportunity to interact with one of the game’s most accomplished figures.
The programme will conclude with a session involving national team coaches and regional technical advisors, providing a platform for technical discussions on the future direction of football in Benin.
Vieira’s presence is expected to resonate strongly across the local football community, not only because of his achievements in Europe but also due to his African roots.
Born in Dakar, he moved to France at a young age but has consistently spoken about the importance of his heritage in shaping his identity.
Widely regarded as one of the finest midfielders of his generation, Vieira enjoyed a distinguished playing career, earning over 100 caps for France and playing a key role in their 1998 World Cup triumph.
He later transitioned into coaching, most recently managing Italian side Genoa.
