Fifa president Gianni Infantino has been asked to appear before the US House Judiciary Committee as part of an investigation into the football governing body’s relationship with President Donald Trump’s administration.
Jamie Raskin, the committee’s top Democrat, has opened an investigation into Infantino and has requested documents relating to the links between Fifa and the Trump administration.
The investigation was launched in a letter dated Sunday, with Raskin seeking information that could provide details of the relationship between the world football governing body and the US president’s administration.
According to The Athletic, the Democratic congressman has asked Infantino to provide records concerning interactions and any benefits involving Trump, members of his administration or their families.
Raskin wants Infantino to produce “a list of anything of value (including transfer of money, gifts, prizes, awards, or public appearances) given to President Trump, members of his Administration, or their family members, or any entity associated with them, such as The Trump Organization.”
The request comes after relations between Infantino and Trump attracted widespread attention during the 2026 World Cup, which was staged against the backdrop of increased scrutiny of the relationship between the Fifa president and the US administration.
The issue became particularly prominent during the tournament when Trump reportedly contacted Infantino by phone to ask for a review of the suspension imposed on United States player Folarin Balogun.
Balogun had been suspended for the USA’s Round of 16 knockout match against Belgium, but Fifa later confirmed that the player would be available for the fixture.
The decision prompted global outrage because of the involvement of the US president in asking the Fifa chief to review the player’s suspension. Fifa, however, insisted that the decision to allow Balogun to play was made independently.
The episode has now become part of wider questions surrounding the relationship between Infantino and Trump’s administration, with Raskin’s investigation seeking documents that could shed further light on the nature of those ties.
