Ghana international winger Abdul Fatawu has joined newly promoted Premier League club Ipswich Town from Leicester City on a five-year contract.
The 22-year-old has signed a deal that will keep him at Portman Road until the summer of 2031, with Ipswich completing the transfer for an undisclosed fee.
Fatawu becomes part of Gary O’Neil’s squad after establishing himself as an experienced international player with Ghana. He featured in all four of the Black Stars’ matches at the 2026 Fifa World Cup, including their group-stage meeting with England.
The winger has made 32 appearances for Ghana and scored three goals since making his international debut.
Fatawu said Ipswich’s ambitions played an important role in his decision to move to the club and expressed his excitement at beginning a new chapter in his career.
“I am proud to have signed for Ipswich Town,” Fatawu said. “The ambition the club has is very exciting, and I’m looking forward to being a part of that as we prepare for the Premier League season.”
The Ghanaian also said discussions with manager O’Neil gave him a clearer understanding of what will be expected from him at his new club.
“After speaking to the manager, I know what the expectation is and I’m looking forward to meeting my teammates and starting work,” he added. “I have played against Ipswich a few times during my time in England and I know how passionate the supporters are for the club, so I’m excited to play for them and show them what I can do.”
Fatawu’s arrival gives Ipswich a player with experience of English football, European competition and international tournaments as they prepare for their Premier League campaign.
His career began in Tamale, Ghana, where he played for Steadfast before moving to Dreams FC on loan in October 2021. His performances during that period attracted attention and eventually led to a move to Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon.
At Sporting, Fatawu gained experience in European football and also played in the Champions League, further developing his reputation as an attacking player.
He later moved to England, joining Leicester City on loan for the 2023-24 season. The winger played an important part in Leicester’s Championship title-winning campaign and was subsequently named the club’s Young Player of the Year.
His performances convinced Leicester to make the transfer permanent.
Fatawu continued to play an important role for the Foxes after completing his permanent move and enjoyed a productive 2025-26 campaign. He scored nine goals in 44 appearances for Leicester during the season before making the switch to Ipswich.
The Ghana international now begins a new challenge with Ipswich, who have secured his services on a long-term contract running through to 2031.
His experience with Ghana, including his involvement at the 2026 World Cup, adds to a career that has already taken him from the domestic game in Tamale to Portuguese football, the Champions League and English football.
Fatawu will now turn his attention to life at Ipswich, where he will work under O’Neil and look to establish himself as an important member of the squad.
The winger’s immediate task will be to adapt to his new surroundings, link up with his new team-mates and help Ipswich compete at the highest level of English football.
For Fatawu, the move represents another significant step in a career that has progressed rapidly since his early days with Steadfast and Dreams FC in Ghana.
