Enzo says he “didn’t hesitate for a second” before joining Manchester City and has thanked former head coach Enzo Maresca for making “a lot of effort” to help complete the transfer.
The 25-year-old spoke in Spanish to Manchester City’s official channel after arriving at the club, describing the move as the fulfilment of a long-held ambition.
“Honestly, I’m really happy to be here. I’ve always dreamed of joining a great club like Manchester City,” he said. “I’m grateful for this opportunity. This is a very exciting moment for me and my family.”
Enzo added that he had immediately been struck by the scale of the club and was determined to help Manchester City continue its success.
“From the day they trusted me and called to say they wanted me to join the club, I didn’t hesitate for a second,” he said. “This is a club that has won many honours in recent years. This is a club that is writing history in football, and for me, it’s a huge challenge to be here, help the club, and continue to win honours together.”
He said a Bible verse he read during the transfer process gave him a sense that the move was the right one.
“It doesn’t have any special meaning, but I have a strong belief in God,” Enzo said. “I read the Bible, and during the transfer, I was reading the Bible, and a verse deeply touched my heart, so I felt that this was the right direction.”
Manchester City have made a number of signings while also seeing players depart, and Enzo said he had been impressed by the squad despite not yet taking part in training.
“I haven’t had the chance to participate in training yet, but I’ve been watching their games on TV,” he said. “Honestly, the squad Manchester City has built this year is incredible, and I’m happy to see the team moving in this direction.”
The midfielder said the club must challenge for every trophy available because of its history and reputation.
“Manchester City must compete for every trophy we are involved in,” he said. “In every competition we participate in, we must compete and win, because the history and legacy of this club demand it.”
Maresca, who was Enzo’s head coach at his previous club, was praised for both his coaching and his contribution to the transfer.
“Honestly, he’s a top coach,” Enzo said. “That was an incredible time. I learned a lot from him. He’s very passionate, very much like a Latino. So, it’s an honour to work with him.”
He added: “I’m also very grateful, because he played a crucial role in me coming here.”
Enzo said the move had required considerable effort from both himself and Maresca.
“Both of us were very eager for this transfer to happen, because it wasn’t easy for me to be here today,” he said. “But I know he also put in a lot of effort to communicate with the club, and I’m grateful for everything he did.”
He also revealed that he had remained in regular contact with Willy during the negotiations.
“I have a very good relationship with him,” Enzo said. “He always sends me messages, asking how the transfer is going, whether I’m coming.”
The Argentina international reflected on the 2022 World Cup, which he described as one of the most important periods of his life. He had made only a few appearances for Argentina before being selected for the tournament, where he helped represent his country, his people and his family.
“It was a huge honour, and then everything naturally unfolded,” he said. “I’m very happy and grateful to have won that trophy, which will always be historic. These are moments in my career that I will never forget, and they will always remain in my heart.”
Enzo said experience gained in Argentine football, Portugal and the Premier League had helped him develop physically and tactically. He admitted the physical demands of English football had been difficult during his first year, but said additional training and preparation had improved his condition.
“I do extra training and preparation to ensure I’m in the best possible shape for matches, and that has helped me a lot to achieve what I have today,” he said.
He described himself as a versatile midfielder who enjoys possession and combining with team-mates.
“I really like to have the ball and combine with teammates,” Enzo said. “I can defend, attack, provide assists and score goals, but these are all aspects I’ve been working on throughout my career.”
He also acknowledged the Argentine players who had previously made their mark at Manchester City, including Julian and Otamendi.
“Manchester City is one of the top clubs not only in Argentina but worldwide,” he said. “So for me, it’s an honour to be here, give 100% every day, and lead the club to even greater heights.”
Enzo ended by thanking Manchester City’s supporters for their welcome and promising to give his full effort in training and matches.
“To be honest, I feel at home here, which is very important for a player to build confidence,” he said. “I will give 100% in every training session and every match, every day, to help this club achieve all its goals this season, win many trophies together, and enjoy it.”
