Dundee United marked their manager Jim Goodwin’s absence with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park, securing their first Scottish Premiership win of the season.
Goodwin was admitted to hospital on Thursday, with United confirming on Saturday morning that the 44-year-old “continues to deal with an ongoing medical matter”.
Assistant manager Lee Sharp took charge on the touchline and saw his side produce an outstanding display, scoring three times before half-time to take control.
United had failed to score in their previous three matches in all competitions, but Emmanuel Agyei, Zac Sapsford and Will Ferry were all on target before the break. Jesse Randall completed the scoring late on.
The result leaves Kilmarnock bottom of the table without a point. They have now conceded 13 goals in their opening three top-flight matches.
It was also a difficult afternoon for two defenders brought in to strengthen Neil McCann’s troubled defence. Hull loanee Cathal McCarthy gave away the penalty for United’s second goal, while German full-back Jonathan Meier was substituted at half-time.
United should have taken the lead after only seven minutes when Michael Forbes failed to convert Sapsford’s delicate cross with a header.
Agyei made no mistake five minutes later. United worked a short corner to Mehdi Merghem, who delivered quickly towards the near post. Agyei rose powerfully to head beyond Max Stryjek and score his second goal for the club.
Kilmarnock’s problems increased when centre-back Robbie Deas went off injured after 19 minutes. George Stanger replaced him.
United were awarded a penalty nine minutes before the interval after referee Nick Walsh judged that McCarthy had committed an infringement while defending a corner. VAR supported the decision, McCarthy was booked and Sapsford recovered from a slip to score his fourth goal of the season.
Ferry produced the outstanding moment of the match for the third goal. The midfielder cut in from the left with no Kilmarnock player able to close him down before curling a superb 22-yard effort into the top corner.
Kilmarnock did create some opportunities before half-time, with Joe Hugill and Mark O’Hara testing United goalkeeper Jack Walton, but the visitors were good value for their commanding lead.
McCann attempted to change the momentum by introducing Djenairo Daniels for the second half. It was the forward’s first appearance since returning from a 10-month injury absence.
However, Kilmarnock struggled to make an impact and McCann had used all five substitutes by the 64th minute.
Hugill had a chance to give the hosts hope three minutes after the restart, but he fired over the crossbar from a promising position.
United remained comfortable and continued to threaten. Sapsford saw a header saved after he was left unmarked, while Stryjek also made an excellent stop to deny substitute Lachlan Rose.
The Kilmarnock goalkeeper was powerless to prevent United’s fourth in the 77th minute. Ferry drove forward down the left before sending an accurate cross towards the far post, where New Zealand international Randall met it first time to sweep the ball into the net.
The victory gives Dundee United an important lift after a difficult start to the campaign, while Kilmarnock face further questions after another heavy defeat and remain pointless at the foot of the Scottish Premiership.
