Diop sees positive signs as Morocco prepare for World Cup

Morocco defender Issa Diop has underlined the importance of results over performances after the Atlas Lions secured a 2-1 victory against Paraguay in an international friendly, as preparations continue for the 2026 World Cup.

Speaking after the match, Diop said the win represented a significant step forward for the national side, even though he acknowledged that the team is still far from its finished form. The defender stressed that, at this stage of preparation, securing victories is the primary objective.

“It’s always great to win matches, especially during this stage of preparation for the World Cup. Even if everything isn’t ideal, we won, and that’s what matters most,” he said.

Morocco are currently undergoing a period of transition, with changes both in personnel and tactical approach. Diop, who has recently been integrated into the squad, highlighted the challenges that come with adapting to a new system and building cohesion among players who are still getting to know one another.

Despite these adjustments, he expressed optimism about the team’s overall trajectory. Reflecting on recent fixtures, he suggested that the broader picture remains encouraging.

“I think the overall outcome of the two matches is very positive. There are many new players, and we are getting to know each other under a new coaching staff with a new playing style. So overall, the evaluation is good,” he explained.

The defender also pointed to the limited preparation time available to the squad, noting that such constraints make it more difficult to fully implement tactical ideas. Nevertheless, he believes the team has already begun to show signs of progress, using friendly matches as an opportunity to develop and refine their approach ahead of major competitions.

Beyond the action on the pitch, Diop reserved special praise for Morocco’s supporters, who he said played a crucial role in motivating the team throughout the encounter. The atmosphere inside the stadium, he noted, provided an additional boost that helped drive the players forward.

“The fans were incredible. The stadium was full, and we were very happy with their support. They pushed us throughout the game and motivated us to give our best. They are truly the 12th player,” he said.

The victory over Paraguay marks Morocco’s first win in this phase of their World Cup preparations, offering a timely morale boost as the team continues to evolve. For Diop, the result serves as an encouraging indicator of the direction in which the squad is heading.

“It’s our first win, and it feels great—especially in preparation matches for the World Cup. It’s a good indicator of what’s to come,” he concluded.

As Morocco continue to balance experimentation with results, the emphasis remains on building a cohesive unit capable of competing at the highest level when the 2026 World Cup arrives.
