Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi has questioned whether his side is sufficiently prepared for the start of the season after a 3-0 defeat by Brentford in the opening round of the Premier League.
The result meant Tottenham’s significant summer investment did not produce an immediate improvement in their first competitive match of the new campaign. Despite strengthening their squad during the transfer window, they were beaten by three goals and began the season without a point.
De Zerbi spoke about the state of the team following the defeat, with his assessment pointing to concerns over Tottenham’s readiness at the beginning of the campaign. The Italian took charge at the end of March and is now responsible for attempting to improve a side that endured a difficult previous season.
Tottenham finished 17th last term, ending the campaign only one place above the relegation positions. They had been close to dropping out of the top flight but eventually secured their place in the division.
That background gives added weight to the opening-day defeat. The club entered the summer having strengthened seriously in the transfer market, but the changes were not enough to prevent a heavy loss against Brentford in their first league fixture.
For De Zerbi, the match provided an early indication of the work still required. A new campaign began with expectations that Tottenham could move away from the problems that affected them last season, yet the three-goal margin left the team facing immediate questions about its condition and level of preparation.
The defeat also placed greater focus on the balance between recruitment and performance. Tottenham added players during the summer, but the opening result showed that new arrivals alone have not instantly transformed the team. De Zerbi’s comments underline the need for the squad to develop into a more settled and competitive unit.
The Italian manager’s appointment came late in the previous season, in the final weeks of March. His time in charge therefore began against the backdrop of a Tottenham team fighting to remain in the Premier League. The club survived, finishing 17th, but the margin for error was small.
The loss to Brentford does not by itself decide the direction of the season, but it has ensured that Tottenham’s progress will be examined from the opening fixture. Their summer reinforcements were unable to alter the outcome in the first match, while De Zerbi’s view of the team’s condition suggests that further improvement is needed.
Tottenham now have to respond to the setback as they attempt to establish themselves after last season’s difficult campaign. Brentford’s 3-0 victory leaves De Zerbi with an early challenge: turning a heavily reinforced squad into one capable of producing stronger results in the Premier League.
