Crystal Palace’s move for FC Augsburg centre-back Chrislain Matsima has broken down after the German club abruptly ended negotiations over the transfer of the 24-year-old.
The Franco-Congolese defender had been identified by the Premier League side as a key target to replace Maxence Lacroix, who is expected to leave Crystal Palace imminently. Discussions had progressed to an advanced stage and Matsima appeared close to a switch to England.
However, Augsburg have taken what has been described by reporter Florian Plettenberg as a “radical” decision to cut off talks with the Eagles. The Bundesliga club have brought discussions to a halt due to a fundamental disagreement over the financial structure of the deal.
Crystal Palace and Augsburg were unable to find common ground on payment terms and performance-related add-ons. Palace maintained a firm stance throughout the talks and refused to adjust their position on how the transfer should be structured.
With neither side willing to compromise, Augsburg’s hierarchy chose to end the negotiations entirely rather than prolong the stand-off. The club have, according to the same report, broken off dialogue with Crystal Palace on a definitive basis.
Matsima to remain at Augsburg
Matsima was informed of the collapse of the move on Wednesday. The defender, who was preparing for a potential move to the Premier League, must now reset his focus and rejoin the Augsburg first-team group.
Inside the German club there is said to be no expectation that discussions will resume. Augsburg officials are described as having no optimism about any fresh approach from Crystal Palace or a late revival of the transfer.
From the Bundesliga side’s perspective, the route to the Premier League for Matsima via this particular deal is considered closed. They do not anticipate Crystal Palace returning to the negotiating table under the current conditions.
Long-term contract and valuation
Matsima, born in Colombes in the Paris suburbs, remains under a long-term contract with FC Augsburg, which runs until the summer of 2030.
He is currently valued at €22m and earns an annual salary of €2,260,000 with the German club. That wage equates to 1,469,000,000 FCFA.
For Crystal Palace, the collapse of talks means the club must now look elsewhere for a replacement for Maxence Lacroix as they continue their planning for the new season. Augsburg, meanwhile, retain a defender tied down on a lengthy deal but one who has seen a high-profile move fall through at an advanced stage.
