Kaizer Chiefs forward Wandile Duba has expressed confidence that his side can still secure a top-two finish in the Betway Premiership, despite a significant points gap to second-placed Orlando Pirates.
The Soweto-based club strengthened their position in the league standings with a 3-1 victory over Orbit College at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Monday. The result lifted Chiefs to third place on 39 points after 21 matches, keeping their hopes of a strong finish to the season alive.
Although they remain ten points behind Orlando Pirates, Duba insisted that the team’s target remains firmly set on breaking into the top two. Speaking after the match, he emphasised the importance of maintaining a perfect run in the remaining fixtures.
“Our plan is finishing in the top two right now,” said Duba on SuperSport TV.
“We just have to win all remaining matches. If we can do that, we can get number two or three.”
The victory over Orbit College did not come without challenges. Chiefs endured a difficult opening phase and struggled to impose themselves early in the match. However, Duba noted that the team showed resilience by regrouping and executing their strategy effectively as the game progressed.
“I’m very happy about the match [we played against Orbit], we didn’t start in a good way,” he added.
“But we settled into the game after 20 minutes, then we were able to get the first goal.
“We told each other that we have to calm down because we knew we had a good plan for the game and it would work, it’s just that things didn’t go well in the first 20 minutes.”
Chiefs’ ability to recover after a slow start proved decisive, as they went on to control the game and secure all three points. The win provides momentum at a crucial stage of the season, with the team aiming to close the gap on the sides above them.
With only a limited number of matches remaining, the margin for error is slim. Duba’s comments underline a belief within the squad that consistency will be key if they are to achieve their objective.
The result also highlights a broader sense of determination within the camp, as Chiefs seek to finish the campaign strongly. While the points deficit remains a challenge, the team’s current position suggests that a top-three finish is within reach, with second place still a possibility if results elsewhere go in their favour.
