Rayan Cherki asked manager Enzo Maresca to keep him on the pitch for five more minutes before making an immediate impact in Manchester City’s 4-1 away win against Crystal Palace.
The result gave Manchester City their second victory of the season, with Cherki admitting after the match that he had struggled during his time on the field before producing the contribution that helped his side secure the points.
The attacking midfielder explained that he had realised Maresca was preparing to replace him, prompting him to make a personal request to the manager.
“I was playing really badly, and then I saw Maresca wanted to substitute me, so I asked him, ‘Give me five more minutes, and you won’t need to take me off’. But overall, I still need to perform better.”
Cherki’s comments highlighted both his determination to remain involved and his own assessment that his performance had fallen below the standard he expected from himself. Despite that difficult spell, he needed only five additional minutes to make an impact as Manchester City moved to their second win of the campaign.
Manchester City’s emphatic scoreline at Crystal Palace ensured the focus after the final whistle was on the team’s attacking output and the importance of the victory. For Cherki, however, the match also provided a reminder that a player can influence a game even after failing to find his rhythm early on.
His request to Maresca came at a decisive moment. Rather than accepting a substitution, Cherki asked for a brief further opportunity to change the match. The decision to leave him on was rewarded almost immediately, allowing him to play a part in a result that ended with Manchester City scoring four times away from home.
The midfielder was nevertheless unwilling to present his contribution as a complete performance. His assessment remained self-critical, with Cherki saying he still needed to improve despite the positive outcome for the team.
Manchester City’s 4-1 success at Crystal Palace therefore combined a convincing result with a personal moment of persistence from Cherki. His five-minute appeal gave him the chance to remain on the pitch, and he took that opportunity to make the difference he had promised Maresca.
The victory represents Manchester City’s second win of the season, while Cherki’s post-match comments underline his ambition to produce more consistent performances as the campaign continues.
