Chelsea’s 41-man squad leaves Xabi Alonso with major decisions before transfer deadline

Chelsea have 41 first-team players to manage with only 25 days remaining before the summer transfer window closes, leaving new head coach Xabi Alonso facing a major reshaping task ahead of the 2026-27 season.

The size of the squad has become one of the club’s most pressing issues before the new campaign begins. Chelsea are expected to decide which players remain part of Alonso’s plans, which can be sold and which may need to leave on loan.

The club’s absence from European competition this season further reduces the need for such a large group. Without the additional matches created by continental tournaments, Chelsea have less reason to maintain a first-team squad containing more than 40 registered players.

Alonso therefore wants to reduce the group to about 25 players. That would require Chelsea to move on 16 players before the beginning of September, according to the BBC.

The situation reflects a problem that has become familiar at Stamford Bridge in recent years, with the number of registered first-team players again reaching 41. The figure leaves the Spanish coach with a substantial selection challenge as he attempts to establish the shape of his new team.

Premier League rules do offer Chelsea some flexibility. Clubs can benefit from special provisions relating to players aged under 21 and footballers who have come through their own academy. Those exemptions allow a team to register more players than the usual squad limit might suggest.

However, that registration flexibility does not remove the practical difficulties created by an oversized group. Alonso is understood to recognise that retaining a large number of players who are not part of his sporting plans would not help the team’s stability.

The coming weeks will therefore be decisive in determining which players remain at Chelsea beyond the transfer deadline. Some members of the current squad are available for permanent transfers, while others are candidates for loan moves as the club works towards a smaller and more manageable group.

The objective is not simply to reduce the headline number of players. Chelsea must also establish a squad that better reflects the demands of a season without European football and gives Alonso a clearer set of options to work with.

With the deadline approaching, the club’s priority is to resolve the imbalance between the 41 players currently registered and the squad of roughly 25 that Alonso is seeking. The process could lead to 16 departures before the start of September, as Chelsea begin a significant reorganisation under their new head coach.
