Chelsea are reportedly preparing a €100m offer for Atletico Madrid midfielder Pablo Barrios when the January transfer window opens, according to The Touchline.
The 23-year-old Spain midfielder has been identified as a priority target by Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso following Enzo Fernandez’s departure to Manchester City.
Chelsea representatives are planning to make their approach in January, although the report does not indicate that a formal bid has yet been submitted. Barrios has emerged as the London club’s preferred midfield option as Alonso considers how to strengthen his squad after Fernandez’s exit.
Barrios is under contract with Atletico Madrid until 2030, and the Spanish club do not intend to part with him in the foreseeable future. That position could make any attempt to sign him difficult, despite the proposed size of Chelsea’s reported offer.
The midfielder’s valuation on Transfermarkt is €55m, while his release clause is set at €500m. A €100m bid would therefore be significantly above his current Transfermarkt valuation, but well below the amount required to activate the release clause in his Atletico Madrid contract.
The reported interest places Barrios at the centre of Chelsea’s plans for the next transfer window. The club are understood to have selected him as their leading midfield target after Fernandez left for Manchester City, with Alonso identifying the Atletico Madrid player as the priority option.
Atletico Madrid’s stance, however, is clear. The club are not planning to sell Barrios in the near future, while the long length of his contract gives them a strong position in any negotiations. Unless the player’s situation changes, Chelsea would need to convince Atletico Madrid to consider a transfer rather than simply rely on the midfielder’s release clause.
For now, the proposed €100m figure remains a reported plan rather than a completed deal. The Touchline says Chelsea intend to make the offer in January, when the winter transfer window opens, but Atletico Madrid’s reluctance to sell means there is no indication that an agreement is close.
Barrios is therefore being presented as the latest major target linked with Chelsea under Alonso. His existing contract runs for another several years, Atletico Madrid value him more highly through his release clause, and the club do not currently expect to lose him.
The report also underlines the scale of Chelsea’s response to Fernandez’s departure. Rather than pursue a short-term replacement, the London club have reportedly made a 23-year-old Atletico Madrid midfielder their priority and are prepared to consider a €100m proposal for him when January arrives.
