Cameroon are weighing an approach for 17-year-old Brian Madjo, who is reportedly open to representing the Indomitable Lions despite having featured for England’s youth teams, while Cameroon Football Federation president Samuel Eto’o is currently in London.
Madjo’s position has attracted attention because no decision has yet been made over his senior international future. According to Allez les Lions, the Aston Villa forward would not be ruling out a switch to Cameroon. However, there has been no confirmation that Eto’o has arranged a meeting with the player.
The timing of Eto’o’s visit to England has therefore prompted speculation about whether discussions could take place, although his presence in the country does not necessarily mean that contact with Madjo is planned.
Madjo’s international background is unusual. Before becoming involved with England’s youth sides, he had already represented Luxembourg at senior level. His international career has consequently involved three possible countries: England, Luxembourg and Cameroon.
His appearances for England’s junior teams do not automatically prevent him from choosing another national side in the future. The decision could nevertheless become more pressing as his club career develops and the different countries set out their plans for him.
England can offer Madjo a highly competitive footballing environment and access to one of the deepest talent pools in international football. The route into the senior team, however, is likely to be difficult because of the strength of competition for attacking positions.
Cameroon could argue that it would provide a quicker pathway into senior international football, as well as a central role in a longer-term project. The country has previously persuaded several players who came through England’s youth system to choose the Indomitable Lions, including Jayden Ngwashi, William Gueke and Douka Nkoto.
Madjo has already shown his potential at club level. He delivered an impressive performance and scored in the European Super Cup against Paris Saint-Germain, further increasing interest in his progress.
Despite the attention, the teenager is under no obligation to make an immediate decision. He can continue to assess how his club career develops before choosing the country he wants to represent at senior level.
Eto’o’s status could be important if Cameroon decide to make a formal approach. The former Metz player remains a prominent figure in the country’s football, and his influence may carry weight with Madjo and the player’s family and representatives.
But the Cameroon Football Federation will need to offer more than an appeal based on the player’s heritage. Madjo is likely to want clear information about the role he could occupy, the opportunities available to him and the steps planned to support his development.
His previous decision to represent Luxembourg suggests that the prospect of being offered a place at senior level alone may not be enough to secure his commitment. Cameroon will need to present a convincing sporting plan if it is to turn reported interest into a firm agreement.
England remain in the stronger position because Madjo has already been included in their youth set-up. Until he commits his future to a senior national team, however, Eto’o and Cameroon still have an opportunity to make their case.
