Premier League champions Arsenal have agreed a £75m (R1.7bn) deal to sign Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes, according to reports in the British media.
The London club initially saw an offer for the 28-year-old Brazil midfielder rejected earlier this week, but returned with an improved bid that has now reportedly been accepted by Newcastle. Sky Sports reported that an agreement had been reached between the two clubs.
Reuters has contacted Arsenal and Newcastle United for confirmation of the proposed transfer.
Guimaraes is understood to have previously told Newcastle that he would like to move to Arsenal if an acceptable offer was made. Newcastle had been keen to keep their captain, who has two years left on his contract at St James’ Park, with the club also holding an option to extend the deal by another year.
The midfielder joined Newcastle from French club Olympique Lyonnais in January 2022 and quickly established himself as one of the team’s most influential players.
He has played 195 matches in all competitions for Newcastle, scoring 31 goals. Guimaraes also captained the club to League Cup success in 2025, helping Newcastle end a long wait for domestic silverware.
His expected arrival would give Mikel Arteta another high-quality and experienced option in midfield as Arsenal prepare to defend their Premier League title and compete in Europe.
Guimaraes has also become a regular member of the Brazil national team in recent years. He represented his country at the 2026 World Cup.
The reported move would represent another significant loss for Newcastle, who have also seen key players Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali leave, while manager Eddie Howe has departed the club.
Guimaraes’ possible transfer comes despite Newcastle’s efforts to retain the player and underline his importance to the team. His leadership and performances since arriving from Olympique Lyonnais made him a central figure in the club’s progress, culminating in their League Cup triumph in 2025.
Arsenal’s improved bid has therefore set the stage for a major move involving one of the Premier League’s established midfielders, although neither club had confirmed the agreement when reports emerged.
