Bruno Fernandes scored three times as Manchester United captain in Sunday’s 5-2 Premier League victory over Ipswich Town, drawing level with Cristiano Ronaldo for hat-tricks recorded in the club’s colours.
The Portugal international struck in the 40th, 61st and 68th minutes to complete his treble against Ipswich. Fernandes then made another decisive contribution late in the match, assisting Bryan Mbeumo in the 82nd minute as Manchester United finished with five goals.
According to The Touchline, Fernandes has now scored three hat-tricks for the Red Devils, the same number as his compatriot Ronaldo. The achievement places the Manchester United captain alongside one of the most prolific goalscorers in the club’s recent history.
Fernandes’ three-goal performances have come in different competitions and across several years. His first hat-trick for Manchester United was against Leeds in August 2021, in the Premier League. He then scored three times against Real Sociedad in March 2025 in the Europa League.
His latest treble came against Ipswich in a match in which he influenced the contest beyond his finishing. Fernandes’ assist for Mbeumo added to his attacking contribution and helped complete Manchester United’s five-goal return.
The midfielder has represented Manchester United since the beginning of 2020. During that time, he has established himself as a central figure for the club and has worn the captain’s armband. His performance against Ipswich combined the responsibilities of leadership with the individual numbers associated with a commanding attacking display.
The comparison with Ronaldo is particularly significant because both players are Portuguese internationals who have made a substantial impact at Manchester United. Fernandes has reached three hat-tricks for the club, matching Ronaldo’s total, while doing so through goals against Leeds, Real Sociedad and Ipswich.
Sunday’s result also provided the setting for Fernandes to reach that milestone. His first goal came in the 40th minute, before he added his second 21 minutes later. Seven minutes after that, he completed the hat-trick. His involvement continued until the closing stages, when he supplied the pass for Mbeumo’s goal in the 82nd minute.
Manchester United’s 5-2 scoreline therefore reflected a match in which Fernandes was responsible for four direct goal contributions. Three came through his finishing and the fourth through his assist, making him the defining figure in the Premier League meeting with Ipswich.
The treble against Ipswich is Fernandes’ third for Manchester United since his arrival at the start of 2020. It brings his total level with Ronaldo’s and adds another landmark to his time at the club.
