Brazil remain the most successful nation in terms of match victories at the FIFA World Cup, according to an all-time ranking released by the sport’s governing body.
The list, published by FIFA during the weekend as the 2026 World Cup enters the Round of 16 stage, ranks countries by the total number of matches they have won in the history of the tournament.
Brazil top the standings with 79 World Cup victories, maintaining a clear lead over Germany, who occupy second place with 70 wins.
Argentina are third on the all-time list with 51 victories, while Italy and France complete the top five with 45 and 44 wins respectively.
England are sixth after recording 35 World Cup victories, narrowly ahead of Spain, who have accumulated 34 wins. The Netherlands are eighth with 32 victories, while Uruguay and Belgium round out the top 10 with 25 and 23 wins respectively.
The ranking was released as attention remains focused on the knockout phase of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where teams continue to compete for a place in the quarter-finals.
Mexico, one of the nations involved in the ongoing tournament, are 11th in the historical standings with 21 World Cup match victories. Sweden follow in 12th place with 20 wins.
Portugal and Russia are tied in 13th position, with each nation having won 19 World Cup matches throughout the tournament’s history.
Serbia occupy 15th place after recording 18 victories, while Poland and Switzerland share 16th position on 17 wins each.
Croatia and Hungary are level in 18th place, both having registered 15 World Cup victories, with Austria completing the top 20 after winning 13 matches.
The figures provide a historical snapshot of the countries that have enjoyed the greatest success in terms of individual match victories since the FIFA World Cup began.
Brazil’s position at the top underlines their long-standing record at the tournament, while Germany remain their closest challengers in the all-time standings. Argentina, Italy and France continue to occupy the remaining places in the top five, reflecting their consistent performances across multiple editions of the competition.
