The Black Satellites of Ghana have begun their preparations for the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship with their first training session in Yamoussoukro, Côte d’Ivoire.
The Ghana U-20 side trained on Saturday under head coach Maxwell Konadu as the team continued its preparations for the regional tournament, which begins on Sunday, 26 July.
Ghana’s first Group B match will come on Monday against regional rivals Nigeria, with the Black Satellites hoping to make a strong start to their campaign and move closer to their objective of reaching the knockout stage.
Konadu oversaw the opening training session as his players worked on their tactics and focused on improving their readiness for the competitive matches ahead.
The Black Satellites will face a demanding group-stage schedule after their meeting with Nigeria. Ghana’s second fixture will be against Burkina Faso before they complete the group phase with a match against Togo.
The team will be aiming to finish strongly enough in the group to advance to the knockout rounds as they attempt to win back the WAFU B U-20 Championship title.
The tournament provides Ghana with an opportunity to compete for regional honours while also measuring the progress of a young squad preparing for future international challenges.
Ghana will enter the competition with the added advantage of already having secured qualification for the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations because the country is scheduled to host the tournament.
That means the Black Satellites do not have to rely on their WAFU B U-20 Championship results to secure a place at the continental tournament. However, the regional competition remains an important part of the team’s preparations and development.
The championship will give Konadu and his technical team an opportunity to assess the squad in competitive conditions while working on the team’s organisation and tactical approach.
It will also allow the players to develop greater understanding and chemistry as they play together against some of the leading young sides in the region.
The Black Satellites’ opening match against Nigeria is therefore expected to provide an early indication of their readiness for the tournament. The two sides will meet in Group B as Ghana begins its attempt to progress beyond the group stage and challenge for the title.
After the Nigeria game, Ghana will turn its attention to Burkina Faso before facing Togo in its final group fixture.
The Black Satellites will be hoping to use the experience of the tournament to continue their development while competing for another regional trophy.
For Konadu, the opening training session represents the start of the final preparations for a campaign that will combine the pursuit of silverware with the longer-term development of the team.
The Ghana coach will have the task of ensuring his players are tactically prepared and ready to compete when the tournament gets under way.
Although the Black Satellites already know they will participate in the 2027 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations as hosts, their focus in Côte d’Ivoire is on producing a strong performance at the WAFU B championship.
Winning the regional title would provide a significant boost to the squad and help build confidence ahead of future challenges.
Ghana’s first training session in Yamoussoukro has now been completed, with preparations continuing ahead of Monday’s meeting with Nigeria.
The Black Satellites will be looking to make the most of their time in the competition by strengthening their team chemistry, evaluating their progress and competing for regional success.
With the tournament beginning on Sunday, the focus is now firmly on Ghana’s Group B campaign and the opening test against Nigeria.
The Black Satellites’ route to the knockout stage will then continue with matches against Burkina Faso and Togo, as Ghana seeks to reclaim the WAFU B U-20 Championship title while using the tournament as an important step in the development of its next generation of players.
