Barcelona are not planning to sign a new midfielder during the current summer transfer window, a decision that could strengthen Real Madrid’s hopes of securing Spain captain Rodri.
Head coach Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco believe Barcelona already have enough options to cover all three midfield positions, according to Spanish newspaper Marca.
The club’s internal assessment has remained unchanged despite concerns surrounding Frenkie de Jong’s injury. While the Dutchman’s absence has prompted speculation among supporters and in the media about a possible midfield signing, Barcelona’s sporting department does not view the situation as requiring an immediate addition.
That confidence in the squad’s depth has also led Barcelona to advise Marc Casado to find a new club this summer. The midfielder is now considered highly likely to leave before the start of the new season.
Rodri emerged as a possible target after discussion increased around Barcelona’s potential search for midfield reinforcements. The Manchester City player, who captains Spain, produced outstanding performances at the most recent World Cup and has been linked with interest from leading European clubs.
However, three factors are understood to have moved Barcelona away from the possibility of pursuing the 70m euro-rated midfielder.
The first is the club’s belief that its midfield already contains sufficient numbers, with Flick and Deco satisfied that the existing squad can cover the available roles. De Jong’s injury has not changed that judgement.
The financial demands of the deal are another obstacle. Barcelona do not consider it sensible to spend close to 70m euros on a player whose principal purpose would be to cover De Jong during his recovery.
The club also has other priorities in the transfer market. Strengthening the attack is considered the main objective, with defensive additions viewed as a secondary requirement.
Barcelona therefore appears unlikely to compete for Rodri, while its officials believe Real Madrid is the player’s most probable destination. The Catalan club’s position could give Real Madrid a clearer route to a deal if the Spanish side decides to pursue the midfielder.
The situation forms part of Barcelona’s wider approach to the summer window. Rather than adding another central midfielder, the club is relying on its current options and directing available resources towards the forward line first, followed by the defence.
Elsewhere, senior figures at FIFA have reportedly called for Gianni Infantino to resign. Infantino’s position is being supported by backing from Arab and African football authorities, which has strengthened his ability to face the campaign against him in Europe.
