Barcelona are monitoring RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba as manager Hansi Flick looks to strengthen his defensive options during the transfer window.
The 23-year-old France international has emerged as a player of interest to the Spanish club, with his ability to operate both at centre-back and left-back understood to be a major attraction for Flick.
According to The Athletic, Flick particularly admires Lukeba’s profile and Barcelona are closely following his situation at Leipzig.
The move, however, could depend on Barcelona creating room in their squad and raising funds through player sales.
Lukeba is reportedly valued at about €50m, while previous reports have placed his release clause as high as €80m.
The higher clause that applied this summer has already expired, while another clause is expected to be set at €65m next year.
Barcelona’s financial position means they would likely need to sell before making a serious move for the defender.
Alejandro Balde has been identified as one possible departure that could help create the financial space required for Lukeba. Jules Koundé could also potentially leave, depending on how the club’s plans develop.
For Flick, Lukeba’s versatility is particularly appealing.
The defender can play centrally or operate at left-back, giving the Barcelona manager the flexibility to use him in different defensive roles.
That versatility could prove valuable to a Barcelona side seeking greater depth and options in its back line.
Lukeba has already established himself at the highest level despite his relatively young age.
After developing at Olympique Lyonnais, the defender moved to RB Leipzig, where he gradually became an important member of the German club’s defence.
His performances have also earned him international recognition with France.
During the season referenced in the reports, Lukeba made 26 appearances, recording an average of 4.9 recoveries, 1.2 interceptions and 1.2 tackles per game. He also scored once.
Those numbers underline the defensive contribution that has attracted Barcelona’s attention, while his technical ability and comfort in different positions have strengthened his appeal to Flick.
The defender’s background also gives the potential move an African dimension.
Lukeba was born in France to Congolese parents and has Congolese heritage, although he represents France internationally.
His rise from Lyon’s academy to Leipzig and the French national team has therefore made him a player with strong links to both French and Congolese football.
For Barcelona, however, the immediate issue is financial rather than footballing.
The Catalan club are interested in Lukeba, but his potential price means they cannot simply complete the transfer without first addressing their squad and financial situation.
Reports suggest that if Lukeba were to leave Leipzig this summer, the German club could demand a fee below the previously reported €80m figure, with estimates placing the potential price at around €45m-€50m.
That figure would still represent a significant investment for Barcelona.
Lukeba’s contract situation could also become an important factor. The €80m clause that applied this summer has expired, while the reported figure for next year would fall to €65m.
Barcelona must therefore weigh the cost of moving now against the possibility of waiting.
