Barcelona winger Bisiwu was carried off on a stretcher after suffering a painful left-ankle injury during Barca Atletic’s 1-0 defeat by Sabadell in the Catalan Cup final on Wednesday.
The Belgian was forced to leave the match at Nova Creu Alta after a heavy challenge from Sabadell defender Pipa. Bisiwu had played for no more than 10 minutes before the injury ended his involvement.
The incident occurred as Bisiwu received the ball and tried to turn away from Pipa to confront the defender. As he attempted the movement, Sabadell’s right-back stepped directly on the heel of his foot, leaving the Barcelona winger in obvious distress.
Bisiwu immediately went down and was left in clear pain on the pitch. Despite the force of the challenge, the referee did not award a foul.
The player quickly called for medical assistance, and after assessing his condition, Barcelona’s medical staff decided that continuing would carry too much risk. Bisiwu initially left the field limping heavily and visibly struggling, before eventually being carried away on a stretcher.
The injury has raised concerns over the extent of the damage, although no diagnosis has yet been confirmed. Bisiwu is due to undergo further medical tests on Thursday, which should provide a clearer assessment of the problem and establish how long he may be unavailable.
Bisiwu had joined Barca Atletic for the opening matches of the season as he continued to settle into life at Barcelona. His arrival had made a positive impression during pre-season, when he was also given the opportunity to train with the first team.
He was one of the standout players in a friendly against Basel, scoring twice and attracting the attention of the coaching staff. Those performances had created considerable expectations around the Belgian, with Barcelona hoping he would continue to develop over the coming months.
The setback came in an otherwise difficult evening for Barca Atletic, who lost the final 1-0 to Sabadell. The focus now turns to the medical examinations that will determine whether Bisiwu faces a short absence or a longer spell on the sidelines.
The scenes at Nova Creu Alta were particularly worrying for a player who had been making progress within the club and looking to build on his encouraging pre-season displays. Barcelona will wait for the results of Thursday’s tests before putting a more precise timetable on his return.
