Barcelona are stepping up plans to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the summer transfer window, but efforts to secure their primary target, Julian Alvarez, is proving increasingly complicated, with attention shifting to Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen.
The Argentine forward, currently at Atletico Madrid, is understood to be highly regarded by the club’s hierarchy.
However, despite their interest, a potential transfer is expected to be difficult to complete, even if Barcelona return to La Liga’s 1:1 financial rule.
The Catalan side are keen to recruit a high-calibre striker capable of either replacing or competing with established attacking options such as Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres.
Strengthening the forward line is seen as a priority as the club prepares for the upcoming campaign.
With uncertainty surrounding a deal for Alvarez, Barcelona have begun to consider alternative targets. Among those under review is Victor Osimhen, who is currently playing for Galatasaray.
Osimhen has attracted attention with an impressive scoring record, having netted 56 goals in 70 appearances. His efficiency in front of goal has made him a notable candidate as Barcelona seek a reliable attacking presence.
However, despite his goal-scoring credentials, the Nigerian striker is not viewed as the club’s leading option. Reports suggest there are internal concerns regarding his profile, particularly relating to his behaviour and the circumstances of his departure from Napoli in 2024.
These reservations have contributed to a cautious approach from Barcelona, who are aiming to ensure that any new signing aligns not only with tactical requirements but also with dressing room expectations under head coach Hansi Flick.
The club’s search for a suitable striker has already seen other names considered and dismissed. Barcelona had previously shown interest in Benjamin Sesko, but he joined Manchester United in the summer of 2025, effectively ending any pursuit.
Meanwhile, Dusan Vlahovic has also been ruled out, despite the possibility of signing him on a free transfer when his contract with Juventus expires. Barcelona reportedly believe the Serbian forward does not fully match the tactical profile required to lead their attack moving forward.
As the transfer window approaches, Barcelona continue to evaluate their options carefully. While Alvarez remains their preferred choice, the difficulties surrounding his availability mean the club may ultimately have to look elsewhere to reinforce their frontline.
