Auxerre close in on signing DR Congo defender Christ Makosso

AJ Auxerre are close to completing the signing of DR Congo defender Christ Makosso from Luton Town, with the French club reportedly reaching an agreement in principle for the transfer.

According to reports, the deal is worth around £2 million, including performance-related add-ons, and is now entering its final stages as Auxerre look to strengthen their squad ahead of the new Ligue 1 season.

The 22-year-old is expected to return to France after spending last season on loan at Oxford United, where he gained valuable first-team experience and continued his development with regular appearances in English football.

Makosso’s performances during his spell at Oxford are understood to have convinced Auxerre that he has the qualities required to bolster their defensive options.

The DR Congo international has built a reputation for his physical presence, composure in possession and versatility across the back line, attributes that have attracted increasing interest as he continues to progress.

Auxerre view the defender as a long-term addition to their squad as they prepare for another demanding campaign in Ligue 1.

The club are looking to reinforce their defence during the summer transfer window, and Makosso is expected to play a key role in those plans if the move is completed.

For Luton Town, the transfer would represent another change to the squad as preparations continue for the new season.

Although Makosso showed promise during his time in England, opportunities to establish himself at Luton were limited, leading to discussions over a permanent departure this summer.

A move to Auxerre would provide the defender with the opportunity to compete in one of Europe’s leading domestic leagues while continuing his development at club level.

It would also represent another important step in his career as he looks to further establish himself with the DR Congo national team.

The transfer is expected to be finalised once the remaining formalities, including medical examinations, have been completed.

An official announcement from both clubs is anticipated in the coming days if the deal proceeds as expected.
