Atletico de Madrid join Barcelona in race to sign Girona midfielder Azzedine Ounahi

Atletico de Madrid have entered the race to sign Girona midfielder Azzedine Ounahi, putting them in direct competition with Barcelona for the Morocco international.

According to Fichajes, Atletico are looking to strengthen their midfield and regard the 26-year-old as a player capable of offering versatility and influence both with and without the ball. His ability to operate in a more advanced position or in a deeper defensive role is understood to be a key attraction.

Ounahi is currently contracted to Girona until 30 June 2030, leaving the Catalan club in a strong negotiating position. He joined Girona on a permanent basis in August 2025 after the club reached an agreement with Olympique de Marseille.

The midfielder’s performances last season attracted interest from a number of potential suitors. In La Liga, he scored five goals and provided two assists in 1,766 minutes, underlining his importance to Girona’s team.

His displays have also drawn the attention of Villarreal’s recruitment staff, according to sources cited by Africafoot. Barcelona had already expressed an interest in Ounahi as they considered ways to reinforce their midfield, but Atletico’s involvement could increase the competition for his signature and push up the eventual transfer fee.

Transfermarkt estimates Ounahi’s value at €18m. However, Girona could demand between €20m and €25m before considering a sale this summer. His long-term contract means the club are not under immediate pressure to accept an offer and can set their own terms in negotiations.

Atletico must now convince both the player and Girona if they are to move ahead of Barcelona in the pursuit of the Morocco international. Ounahi’s capacity to contribute in several midfield roles, combined with his willingness to move forward from deeper areas, has made him an appealing target for the Madrid club.

Atletico de Madrid will soon begin their Spanish league campaign with a match against Malaga on the opening day. Betting company 1xBet lists Atletico as favourites, offering odds of 1.28 for a home win, while a draw is priced at 5.30 and a Malaga victory at 9.40.
