Atletico agree temporary deal to take Jonathan David from Juventus

Atletico de Madrid have announced the signing of Juventus striker Jonathan David on loan until the end of the current season.

The agreement, confirmed on the Spanish club’s official website, also includes an option for Atletico to make the transfer permanent. The move gives the Madrid side the opportunity to retain the Canada international beyond the loan period, although any future deal would depend on that clause being exercised.

David, 26, joined Juventus last summer and spent the period since then with the Turin club. During his time with the Italian side, he made 47 appearances in all competitions, scoring eight goals and providing five assists.

His contract with Juventus runs until the middle of 2030, meaning the forward remains tied to the club on a long-term agreement despite his temporary switch to Atletico.

The transfer brings David to Atletico for the remainder of the current campaign, with the Spanish club having secured the possibility of deciding on his longer-term future at a later stage. The player will now continue his career in Madrid after his spell with Juventus.

Before the move was confirmed, reports had suggested Atletico could have the option to sign David permanently for a fee of about €25m. That figure had been cited in connection with a potential permanent transfer, while the official announcement confirmed only that an option to buy forms part of the loan agreement.

David represented Juventus in 47 matches across all competitions and contributed directly to 13 goals during his time in Turin, with eight goals and five assists recorded. His departure on loan comes despite the length of his existing contract, which is scheduled to keep him at Juventus until 2030.

Atletico’s announcement makes the loan move official and confirms that David will be available to represent the Madrid club through the end of the season. Any permanent transfer would be considered afterwards under the terms of the purchase option included in the agreement.
