FIFA president Gianni Infantino has hailed Argentina’s “exceptional” World Cup campaign and “unforgettable comeback” – even after a heated final defeat to Spain that descended into violence and controversy.
Infantino’s message to beaten champions
Argentina were beaten 1-0 by Spain in Sunday’s final, with Ferran Torres scoring in extra time to deny the defending champions a second consecutive world title after their triumph at Qatar 2022.
In a notable show of support, Infantino posted a public message to the Albiceleste on Instagram, praising their performance over the tournament.
He wrote: “يا لها من بطولة استثنايية قدمها المنتخب الارجنتيني في كاس العالم! ريمونتادا لا تنسى وروح قتالية الهمت الملايين، ومنحت عشاق كرة القدم حول العالم لحظات خالدة لن تمحى من الذاكرة”.
He added: “ان العودة الى المباراة النهايية لكاس العالم بعد رفع اللقب في نسخة 2022 لهي خير دليل على التميز والمستويات العالية المستمرة للكرة الارجنتينية. شكرا لكم على مساهمتكم في جعل هذه البطولة خاصة جدا، وعلى المنافسة بهذه الشغف الكبير حتى اللحظات الاخيرة”.
Infantino’s comments come at a time when Argentina are under intense scrutiny for their conduct in the final, which featured multiple flashpoints on and off the pitch.
Final marred by red card and clashes
The match, decided deep into extra time by Torres, was overshadowed by several incidents of violence and ill-discipline involving Argentinian players.
Midfielder Enzo Fernandez was sent off after a forceful challenge on Spain’s young defender Pau Cubarsi, a tackle that sparked angry reactions from both sets of players and the benches.
