Hungarian club Újpest FC have opted against making the loan move of Nets Gradiscar permanent, ensuring the striker will return to Al Ahly SC at the end of the current season.
The decision follows an internal evaluation by Újpest, who concluded that the player’s performances during his loan spell did not justify triggering the purchase clause embedded in the agreement.
Loan Spell Ends Without Permanent Move
According to a source within the Hungarian club, Újpest’s management have formally decided not to activate the clause that would have secured Gradiscar’s services on a permanent basis. The forward is now expected to rejoin Al Ahly at the start of their pre-season preparations.
The source indicated that the decision was reached after a “comprehensive technical evaluation” of the player’s contributions, which were ultimately deemed insufficient to warrant a long-term commitment.
The clause in question was valued at €1.5m — the sum Újpest would have been required to pay to retain the striker. However, the club has chosen not to proceed with the transfer and will not pursue further negotiations with Al Ahly over the player.
Al Ahly Begin Squad Restructuring
The development comes at a time when Al Ahly are actively reviewing their squad composition ahead of the new campaign. Club officials are understood to be working on finalising lists of both returning and departing players, in line with the technical staff’s strategic plans.
Gradiscar’s return adds another layer to that process, as the Egyptian side must now determine whether the striker fits into their plans moving forward or if another loan move will be sought.
Uncertain Future for Gradiscar
Upon his return to Cairo, Gradiscar is expected to undergo a fresh assessment by Al Ahly’s technical team during pre-season. That evaluation will play a decisive role in shaping his immediate future at the club.
Options under consideration include retaining him within the squad or arranging another temporary move to provide further playing opportunities. The final decision will depend on how he performs during the preparation period and whether he aligns with the team’s tactical requirements.
No Further Talks Planned
Újpest’s stance appears definitive. The source confirmed that the Hungarian club has no intention of reopening discussions regarding the player, signalling the end of Gradiscar’s time in Budapest.
For Al Ahly, the focus now shifts to integrating returning players and making key decisions that will influence their competitiveness in the upcoming season.
Decision Leaves Door Open for Reassessment
Gradiscar’s return places responsibility firmly back on Al Ahly to decide the striker’s next step. With pre-season evaluations approaching, the club faces a critical choice on whether to reintegrate the player or pursue alternative options in the transfer market.
