Paris Saint-Germain were held to a 2-2 draw by Stade Rennais in their opening French league match of the 2026-27 season, with Morocco international Achraf Hakimi enduring a difficult evening.
PSG had hoped to begin their campaign with a victory as they target another French league title, but an unconvincing performance left the defending champions with only one point.
The result comes after an already disappointing start to the season for Luis Enrique’s side, who lost the French Super Cup 1-0 to Lens. PSG were therefore looking for an immediate response in their first league fixture, but instead found themselves in trouble early against Rennes.
The Parisian side conceded twice in the opening stages and were forced to chase the game. Their response came through new signing Ferran Torres, who arrived from Barcelona and produced two impressive finishes to bring PSG level.
Despite recovering from a two-goal deficit, PSG could not find a winning goal and had to settle for a draw, dropping two points at the beginning of their title defence.
For Hakimi, the match was particularly frustrating.
The Moroccan right-back, who has established himself as one of the leading players in his position in recent seasons, was unable to produce the level of performance expected from him.
His display was reflected in his statistical rating after the match.
According to SofaScore, Hakimi received a rating of 6.2 out of 10, making him the third-lowest-rated PSG player in the game.
Only Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Lucas Hernandez received lower scores among PSG players. Both were given ratings of 6.1.
The assessment represents an unusual position for Hakimi, who has regularly been one of PSG’s most influential performers and is regarded as one of the world’s leading right-backs.
His underwhelming performance against Rennes added to the frustration surrounding the team after their failure to win the French Super Cup.
PSG face early pressure
The draw means PSG have begun their attempt to retain the league championship with a result that will not satisfy a side accustomed to dominating domestic competition.
The club are targeting a sixth consecutive French league title and their ninth championship in the past 10 seasons.
However, their opening two competitive fixtures have already highlighted difficulties within Enrique’s team.
The defeat by Lens in the French Super Cup was followed by the draw against Rennes, meaning PSG have yet to record a victory in either of their first two matches of the new campaign.
The problems against Rennes were particularly evident in the first half, when PSG allowed their opponents to establish a two-goal advantage.
Torres eventually provided the response the champions needed. The former Barcelona player scored twice to restore parity and give PSG a chance of completing the comeback.
But despite recovering from their poor start, Enrique’s players were unable to secure all three points.
Hakimi’s performance will also attract attention because of the high standards he has set during his time at PSG. The Moroccan has been a key figure for the club, particularly from the right side, where his attacking contribution has made him an important part of the team’s approach.
On this occasion, however, the defender was unable to make the same impact.
With PSG seeking another league title, the early dropped points could increase the pressure on Enrique’s side to improve quickly. The champions will need greater consistency if they are to maintain their dominance of French football.
For Hakimi, meanwhile, the Rennes match represents a disappointing beginning to his league campaign. The Moroccan will hope to respond in PSG’s upcoming fixtures and return to the level of performances that has made him one of the club’s most important players.
The 2-2 draw ultimately leaves PSG with work to do, despite Torres’ two-goal contribution, as they begin their pursuit of another French league crown.
