Chelsea’s penalty shootout problems against Liverpool continued on 29 October Beijing time as they were eliminated from the English League Cup after a 6-5 defeat on penalties at Anfield.
The fourth-round tie finished 1-1 after normal time, but Chelsea were unable to secure victory when the match went to a shootout. The result means they have now lost all five competitive meetings with Liverpool that have been decided by penalties.
Chelsea’s first shootout defeat by Liverpool came in the 2007 Champions League semi-final, when they were beaten 4-1. They suffered another loss in the 2019 UEFA Super Cup, going down 5-4.
The clubs then met twice in major domestic cup finals in 2022. Liverpool won the League Cup final 11-10 on penalties before prevailing again in the FA Cup final, with Chelsea losing that shootout 6-5.
Chelsea faced Liverpool once more in the English League Cup, but the latest contest followed the same pattern. After the sides could not be separated at 1-1, Liverpool held their nerve in the shootout to progress to the quarter-finals and leave Chelsea with a fifth defeat from five attempts.
