Cagliari’s Yael Trepy returns two months after near-drowning

Cagliari striker Yael Trepy returned to action two months after nearly drowning in a swimming pool, making his comeback during the club’s 4-2 Serie A defeat by Roma at the Stadio Olimpico.

The 20-year-old came on as a substitute and made an immediate impact, racing into the penalty area and forcing a save from Pierluigi Gollini.

Trepy had impressed during Cagliari’s pre-season campaign and started their Coppa Italia victory over Arezzo on 14 August. Three days later, he was staying with friends at a rented villa when he entered the swimming pool without realising how deep it was.

He got into difficulty and was taken to hospital, where he spent time in intensive care while fluid was removed from his lungs. He subsequently made a full recovery.

His appearance against Roma completed Trepy’s return to football, although Cagliari were unable to mark the occasion with a result despite scoring twice.

A product of the Cagliari youth academy, the striker now resumes a career that was placed in serious danger by the accident.
