Orlando Pirates take on Kaizer Chiefs in the Soweto Derby at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon, with the two Johannesburg rivals heading into the 31 October meeting in sharply contrasting form.
Pirates are unbeaten in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) this season and have won their past three domestic and continental matches. Their recent run includes victories over Namibia’s African Stars in both legs of their CAF Champions League preliminary-round tie.
The Buccaneers’ only defeat in recent weeks came in the MTN8 final against Mamelodi Sundowns on 10 October. Teboho Mokoena and Iqraam Rayners scored for Masandawana in that match, according to the PSL website.
Pirates have had injury concerns to manage, with Evidence Makgopa and Thalente Mbatha still unavailable. Kamogelo Sebelebele is doubtful for the derby, while the club is taking a cautious approach with Oswin Appollis, according to Soccer Laduma.
Chiefs, meanwhile, face the prospect of another season without silverware after a difficult start across domestic and continental competition.
The Amakhosi have fallen to fifth in the PSL and were eliminated from the CAF Confederation Cup in the preliminary rounds. They were beaten 2-3 on penalties by Zambia’s Red Arrows on Friday, as reported by SuperSport.
That leaves Kaizer Chiefs effectively competing for the Nedbank Cup and Carling Knockout Cup. Their most recent PSL victory came against struggling Siwelele at the beginning of September, and they have recorded only three wins from eight league matches.
Their inconsistent results have increased the pressure on coach Fernando da Cruz, who could be dismissed by the end of the year. Chiefs are also at risk of sliding further towards the middle of the table.
The previous meeting between the sides ended in a 1-1 draw, with Sebelebele and Mmodi Pule scoring in the second half in April 2026, according to News24.
Pirates had won the two derbies before that encounter. They recorded a 3-0 away victory in February 2026 and a 3-2 home win in March 2024.
The Buccaneers remain in contention in the PSL, sitting one point behind Sundowns in the title race. They have also reached the CAF Champions League group stage, with the draw scheduled for Wednesday.
Chiefs have struggled to produce victories in either domestic or continental football, while Pirates’ recent results give them the clearer momentum ahead of the derby.
A one-goal victory for Orlando Pirates would allow their PSL title defence to continue progressing, while another setback could leave Chiefs with more ground to recover.
