A single Instagram “like” from Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has intensified speculation about tensions at Old Trafford, after the midfielder appeared to endorse a message warning against pushing loyal people until they lose interest.
Fernandes, 32, was an unused substitute as Manchester United suffered a 3-0 defeat by Bournemouth at the Theatre of Dreams on 31 October 2026. His decision to engage with the post came during one of the club’s most difficult periods and was widely interpreted as an indirect message to the club’s management and supporters.
The post featured a video of a huge stone figure carrying a giant boulder that was rolling down a hill towards a village. As the man tried to stop it, he accidentally damaged one of the village buildings, prompting the residents to turn against him and attack him.
He then released the boulder, allowing it to roll through and destroy the village.
Written above the video was the message: “Do not push a loyal person to the point where they lose interest.” Its caption added: “Usually, the person keeping everything together is the one nobody thinks to check on.”
Those who noticed Fernandes’ reaction viewed it as a deliberate statement rather than a coincidence. They believed the Portugal international was suggesting that he had carried Manchester United through the past six years and was now being placed under excessive pressure.
Fernandes dropped after criticism
Manager Michael Carrick made the unexpected decision to leave Fernandes out of his starting XI against Bournemouth. It was only the sixth time the former Sporting midfielder had been named among the substitutes for a Premier League match since joining Manchester United in 2020.
The decision came only days after Fernandes publicly criticised Carrick’s tactics following a humiliating 4-1 defeat by Como last week. The comments were regarded by many as the beginning of an open dispute between the club captain and his manager, according to The Sun.
Fernandes has been Manchester United’s leading player during his time at the club, scoring 111 goals in 334 appearances. Last season, he won the Premier League Player of the Season award after helping United finish third.
But supporters’ patience with Carrick appears to have run out. Following the Bournemouth defeat, fans directed chants at the manager as he left the pitch, while the players were also met by loud boos.
Reports suggest Carrick is close to being dismissed, with Eddie Howe among the leading candidates to replace him. Against that backdrop, Fernandes’ social-media reaction has been interpreted as a sign that he is “ready for the confrontation”.
