Da Cruz under pressure as Kaizer Chiefs prepare for Red Arrows decider

Kaizer Chiefs coach Fernando da Cruz is facing increased scrutiny following the club’s 1–0 defeat to Zambia’s Red Arrows in the first leg of their CAF Confederation Cup second preliminary-round tie.

The loss has intensified questions about Chiefs’ consistency, with the Soweto side needing a strong response in Friday’s return leg at Moses Mabhida Stadium to keep their continental campaign alive.

Red Arrows secured the advantage in Ndola on 17 October, with captain Alassane Diarra scoring the decisive goal in the second half. Chiefs struggled to create clear chances, prompting Da Cruz to acknowledge shortcomings in his team’s performance.

The French coach admitted that his players lacked aggression and failed to compete effectively in individual duels during the first half. Although he saw an improvement after the break, Chiefs were unable to find an equaliser.

The defeat has added to concerns about the team’s recent form. Reports have highlighted their struggles for consistency in the Betway Premiership, while injuries have limited Da Cruz’s options and contributed to changes in his tactical approach.

There has also been speculation about the coach’s long-term future, with the upcoming continental fixture carrying added significance. However, claims that the Chiefs hierarchy has identified a specific replacement have not been independently confirmed.

Da Cruz, appointed in June 2026 on a two-year contract with an option for an additional year, is tasked with improving the team’s competitiveness and building on its previous continental campaign

Chiefs must now overturn the deficit against Red Arrows, with a 1–0 victory taking the tie to a penalty shootout and a win by at least two goals securing progression outright. The return leg kicks off at 18:00 local time on Friday, 23 October.

With a place in the Confederation Cup group stage at stake, the result could prove important for both the club’s continental ambitions and the scrutiny surrounding Da Cruz’s start in charge.
