Mbappe reaches 26 Champions League assists as Real Madrid beat Leipzig

Kylian Mbappe moved level with Zinedine Zidane and within one assist of Karim Benzema’s French record in the UEFA Champions League during Real Madrid’s 4-1 victory over Leipzig.

Mbappe created Real Madrid’s second goal for Arda Guler with a precise headed pass before scoring the third himself at Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday.

According to statistics provider Opta, the France forward now has 26 assists in the history of the competition. That puts him joint second among French players, alongside Zidane, who is the manager of the France national team.

Benzema remains top of the standings with 27 assists, while former Arsenal and Barcelona forward Thierry Henry is fourth with 25.

The latest contribution means Mbappe is now one assist away from equalling Benzema’s record for French players in the Champions League.

Real Madrid secured their third win of the competition with a four-goal performance at home. The result took them to nine points and fourth place in the table, with only goal difference separating them from leaders Paris Saint-Germain.

Leipzig remain on three points and are 29th in the standings.
