Guirassy says instinctive finish helped Dortmund secure vital win over Sabah

Serhou Guirassy said his opening goal for Borussia Dortmund against Sabah was an instinctive finish after the ball fell to him following a series of saves.

Borussia Dortmund beat Sabah 2-1 on October 20 UTC in the third round of the UEFA Champions League group stage, with Guirassy scoring both goals.

The forward credited Nmecha for his contribution to the first, while also acknowledging the role played by Sabah’s goalkeeper.

“First, congratulations to Nmecha, he played exceptionally well,” Guirassy said after the match. “Then the goalkeeper blocked a few shots, and the ball just fell to me. I simply followed through with the shot; it was more of an instinctive reaction.”

Guirassy added that his second goal came after a well-delivered cross from Joey Veerman Fullkrug. He said his movement created the opportunity before he completed the attack.

“The second goal came from a beautiful cross by Joey Veerman Fullkrug. We all know he has excellent technique,” Guirassy said. “I made a good run and successfully finished the shot, so I’m very happy.”

Despite scoring twice, Guirassy felt Borussia Dortmund should have made more of the chances they created. He warned that the team would need to improve its finishing because matches would not always provide so many opportunities.

“However, as you just said, we could have scored more goals,” he said. “We need to keep working hard and improve our finishing. Not every game offers this many chances, so we must be more efficient and clinical with our final touches.”

The victory was particularly important for Dortmund after several disappointing results, according to Guirassy. He said the result could help restore confidence within the squad, although he accepted that the match itself had been difficult.

“Today’s match was not easy, but it was very important to win after a few disappointing results,” he said. “This victory also helps boost the team’s confidence.”

Guirassy said Dortmund had approached the game with the expectation that victory was required, given the club’s status and responsibility in every fixture. Sabah’s resistance made the task challenging, but he was satisfied that Dortmund had ultimately secured the result.

“We had to win,” he said. “As a strong team, we have a responsibility to win every game. Today’s match was indeed tough, but we ultimately won, and that’s what matters most.”
