Ruben Amorim has become only the third coach in Milan’s history to avoid defeat in each of his first seven Serie A matches in charge.
The Portuguese manager has guided Milan to four wins and three draws, equalling the record set by Luis Carniglia in 1963, according to Opta via MilanNews. Hector Puricelli is the only other coach to achieve the feat, having recorded three wins and four draws from his opening seven league games in 1955.
Amorim extended his unbeaten run with a 3-2 victory over Atalanta at San Siro on Sunday. Goncalo Ramos, Adrien Rabiot and Mario Gila scored for the home side before Milan survived a late attempt at a comeback from Maurizio Sarri’s team.
The result moved the Rossoneri up to fourth place with 15 points, leaving them four points behind joint leaders Inter and Lazio. Milan had also taken a point from Lazio earlier in the season after recovering from 2-0 down.
Amorim joined Milan in June as Massimiliano Allegri’s replacement, having left Manchester United in January. His start in European competition has been less consistent: Milan lost at home to Benfica before responding with a 4-0 win in Salzburg.
Milan’s next fixture is away to Bournemouth in the Europa League on Thursday, followed by a league visit to Udinese on Sunday. The derby against Inter is scheduled for 31 October.
The statistical comparison has a technical qualification. Fabio Capello’s Milan were unbeaten in the 1991-92 Serie A season, but his opening seven matches that season did not represent the beginning of his first spell in charge. Capello had already managed the club for the final six games of the 1986-87 campaign.
That means his record in 1991-92 is not counted among Milan coaches’ first seven Serie A matches, despite the team’s unbeaten start.
