Lazio stun Juventus as Gattuso makes Serie A history

Gennaro Gattuso became the first Lazio manager to win six of his opening seven Serie A matches as the Biancocelesti strengthened their title challenge with a 3-0 victory at Juventus.

Oliver Provstgaard and Gustav Isaksen scored for Lazio, before substitute Fisayo Dele-Bashiru completed the win with his first goal of the campaign.

The result keeps Lazio unbeaten at the start of the season and moves them back into second place, level on points with leaders Inter Milan. It also represents their first league victory at Juventus since 2017 and their fourth successive away win.

Juventus manager Luciano Spalletti watched from the stands while serving a one-match touchline suspension. He was sent off during last Sunday’s match against Cagliari, with assistant manager Marco Domenichini taking charge of the technical area.

The hosts found it difficult to match Lazio’s intensity, although Randal Kolo Muani briefly appeared to have given Juventus the lead in the 24th minute. The striker volleyed into the net, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

Both Kolo Muani and Isaksen had scored in their teams’ previous league matches. Isaksen created Lazio’s first clear opportunity after 30 minutes, but headed narrowly wide.

Lazio went ahead eight minutes before half-time. Mattia Zaccagni delivered a precise cross into the area and Provstgaard headed in from six yards for his first goal for the club.

Nuno Tavares almost doubled the advantage six minutes later when his shot from the edge of the penalty area took a deflection off Gleison Bremer and looped on to the top of the crossbar.

Lazio’s clean sheet in the opening half continued their strong defensive record. Before this round of fixtures, they were one of only two Serie A teams yet to concede before half-time.

Juventus offered little in attack during the first 45 minutes and introduced Nick Woltemade for Kerim Alajbegovic at the interval in an attempt to alter the game.

The substitute missed a good opportunity 10 minutes into the second half, scuffing his effort wide. Juventus were punished midway through the half when Isaksen cut inside and curled a shot into the net. It was the Denmark international’s second goal at Allianz Stadium in as many seasons.

Kolo Muani headed over as Juventus searched for a response, but Lazio added a third in the closing stages. Dele-Bashiru raced clear before sending a low finish beyond Guglielmo Vicario.

The defeat extends Juventus’ difficult run to one win in five matches, alongside two draws and two defeats. It also ends their unbeaten home start and leaves Spalletti’s side eighth in the table.
