Orlando Pirates will face Mamelodi Sundowns in a sold-out MTN8 final at Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday, with kick-off scheduled for 6pm.
The meeting renews one of South African football’s biggest rivalries, with little to separate the teams. Both have established themselves among the leading sides in the Betway Premiership and have now reached the final of the competition.
Much of the focus before the match has centred on how Orlando Pirates coach Abdeslam Ouaddou and his Mamelodi Sundowns counterpart Miguel Cardoso will approach the contest.
Sundowns bring considerable experience to the occasion, with most of their squad having played in high-pressure matches on numerous occasions. Their recent form also includes a 2-1 victory over the highly regarded Saudi Arabian club Al Ahli in the Fifa Intercontinental Cup.
Pirates, meanwhile, have a blend of established players and less experienced campaigners as they attempt to win the MTN8 for a fifth successive time.
Young players including Nkosikhona Ndaba, Sbangani Zulu, Thapelo Mokobodi, Mthetheleli Mthiyane, Simphiwe Selepe, Kabelo Kgositsile and Simphiwe Masilela will be expected to respond to the occasion should they be called upon.
Ouaddou said during the week that more experienced members of his squad would help guide the younger players. Sipho Chaine, defenders Nkosinathi Sibisi, Tapelo Xoki and Deon Hotto, as well as midfielders Thalente Mbatha, Makhehleni Makhaula, Oswin Appollis and Kabelo Dlamini, are among those expected to provide that leadership.
“I am sensing a win because the guys have really shown up with the work rate. I am sensing us lifting the trophy,” said Makhaula, who believes the Buccaneers will secure a fifth consecutive MTN8 title.
Cardoso can call on a group of international players that includes Ronwen Williams, Thapelo Morena, Grant Kekana, Marcelo Allende, Tashreeq Matthews, Nuno Santos, Themba Zwane, Brayan Leon and Arthur Sales.
Sundowns will have to wait until nearer kick-off to discover whether Aubrey Modiba, Teboho Mokoena and Bathusi Aubaas are fit to play. The trio picked up knocks while representing Bafana Bafana last week.
Sundowns attacker Tashreeq Matthews said Pirates would have to match the holders’ experience and determination.
“They are defending champions, have a good and strong team, and they know how to win this tournament. We just have to go out there and fight, and whoever is going to take their chances is probably going to win,” he said.
