Kevin De Bruyne is understood to be more open to joining Major League Soccer than pursuing other options outside Europe if his time at Napoli comes to an end.
The Belgian midfielder has been linked again with San Diego FC, who were previously interested in signing him before he chose to continue his career in Europe.
Napoli are reportedly unlikely to take up the one-year extension in De Bruyne’s contract. His current agreement runs until June 2027, but if the Italian club decide not to activate the additional year, the 35-year-old could become available.
De Bruyne has already shown an interest in playing in MLS. He was previously keen on a move to Chicago Fire, before opting to remain in Europe and join Napoli.
With his long-term future in Italy uncertain, De Bruyne may soon need to assess the most appealing destination for the next stage of his career. A move to Saudi Arabia has been discussed in the past and could emerge as an option again, but MLS is believed to be the league he would be most willing to consider outside Europe if the right proposal arrives.
San Diego FC are among the clubs who could provide that opportunity. The Californian side were heavily linked with the former Manchester City player before he moved to Serie A and are now reportedly preparing for the possibility of making another approach.
The prospect of signing a player with De Bruyne’s technical ability and experience would be attractive to San Diego FC. The club made an impressive start after becoming MLS’s newest franchise, although their level has fallen during 2026.
Improving control and creativity in midfield is one area in which San Diego FC could strengthen. De Bruyne would offer quality, leadership and considerable experience as the club seeks to establish itself among MLS’s leading teams.
The timing of a potential move could also be significant. MLS is planning to launch its new Sprint Season in February 2027. The format will feature a shortened regular season, followed by the playoffs and MLS Cup in May, before the competition moves towards a summer-to-spring calendar.
That new structure could present De Bruyne with a different challenge, while his arrival would represent a major signing for a club aiming to increase its standing in the league.
However, the midfielder’s next move will depend largely on how his situation at Napoli develops and whether a suitable offer becomes available.
Saudi Arabia remains a possible alternative, but if De Bruyne decides to continue his career outside Europe, MLS is currently understood to hold particular appeal.
