Hoffenheim defender Hiroki Machida says he remains determined to return to the Japan squad after a serious injury prevented him from playing at the World Cup.
Machida told Japanese media that his rehabilitation was accompanied by uncertainty as he tried to recover in time for the tournament.
“I was constantly thinking about how to get ready for the World Cup and how to return to the pitch as quickly as possible while undergoing rehabilitation. During that time, I felt anxious and conflicted,” he said.
He added that the wish to represent Japan again was also important to his family.
“For my family, I also strongly felt the desire to return to the national team and perform well,” Machida said.
Watching the World Cup from the sidelines strengthened his belief that Japan need a centre-back capable of competing in one-on-one situations if they are to challenge for the title.
“When I watched the World Cup, I felt that to win the championship, you need a stylish centre-back who won’t be outdone in one-on-one situations,” he said.
“I believe this is a good stage to get close to that level.”
Machida also believes he can fit into different defensive systems, drawing on the experience of the national team’s current squad.
“Based on the team’s current experience, I can also flexibly adapt to a back three or back four formation,” he said.
The defender said watching Japan compete without him left him with a strong sense of regret, while also reminding him of the significance of representing his country.
“While watching, the regret of not being able to be on the field myself was very strong,” Machida said.
“After leaving the national team, I once again felt the pride and beauty of fighting for the country. I also strongly felt that I wanted to return to that place.”
Machida is now focused on earning another call-up through his performances for Hoffenheim ahead of the November series.
“For the November series, I will perform well at the club, hoping to return to the national team,” he said.
